Sex and Health; STDs

Think. An estimated 12 million new sexually transmitted infections (STDs) occur every year, 2/3 are among women and men under age 25. ~ Alan Guttmacher Institute, 1994 "When you have sex with someone, you are having sex with everyone they have had sex with for the last ten years, and everyone they and their partners have had sex with for the last ten years." ~ C. Everett Koop, M.D., former U.S. Surgeon General

"Many Teenagers, as well as adults, are indirectly exposed to more than one sexual partner each year because their partner has had sex with someone else." ~ Alan Guttmacher Institute, 1994

Our Services

The Center for Disease Control recommends screening whenever you are exposed to a new sexual partner. Choices Pregnancy Center offers free testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea for men and women on Tuesdays from 4pm - 8 pm. Other hours may be arranged by appointment. It is best to call for an appointment but walk ins are also welcome. Or e-mail us. ID is required! All of our services are confidential.

Prevention

Abstaining from sex is the only way to be 100 percent confident that you will avoid a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)

Prevention through avoiding exposure is the best strategy for controlling the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Proper use of condoms with each sexual intercourse experience can reduce but not eliminate the risk of STDs. ~ Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Morning After Pill (Plan B)

Before taking the Morning After Pill, you should understand what it is, what it could mean to your health and how it works. Give us a call and one of our counselors will be happy to discuss it with you, confirm your pregnancy and advise you on your options.

What is it?

The "morning after pill" is a large dose of oral contraceptive. Known as Plan B, the pill is actually 2 tablets, one taken within 72 hours of intercourse and the second 12 hours later. It is NOT the same as RU-486.

How does it work?

Plan B is believed to act as an emergency contraceptive principally by preventing ovulation or fertilization. In addition, it may inhibit implantation. It is not effective once the process of implantation has begun.
