Negative Pregnancy Test
What does it mean when you have missed a period?
Pregnancy
This is the most common reason for missing a period. If a woman is pregnant, the test is usually positive by the time she misses her period. However, sometimes a woman may have conceived later than expecte in her cycle. If the new pregnancy hasn't implanted sufficiently to produce adequate levells of the prenancy hormone (hCG), the test will be negative. For this reason, we always recommend a repeat test in one week unless a woman starts her period.
Other causes of missed periods:
- Stress of any kind
- Finals week in college, breaking up with a boyfriend, moving, the loss of a loved one, losing a job, travel, etc.
- Periods will resume when life gets back to normal.
- Weight Issues
- Sudden weight loss through illness, dieting or heavy physical exercise can alter your cycle.
- Usually when your diet gets back to normal, your periods will also get back to normal.
- When a woman is extremely overweight, she may not have regular periods.
- The best solution is for a woman to keep her weight within an average range for her height.
- Change in daily routines
- If your life has suddenly changed in the way you eat, work, sleep, or exercise, it may impact your menstrual cycle.
- Getting your life back to normal will usually result in your periods becoming regular again.
- Intense exercise programs
- Women who are athletes with heavy physical training regimens often miss periods.
- Women need a certain amount of fat on their bodies for the ovaries to function normally. If you don't ovulate, you probably won't have regular periods.
- When your body weight increases, you will probably start having
regular periods again.
- Some forms of birth control
- Some types of hormonal birth control may cause a woman to have very light periods or none at all.
- Some forms of birth control like the Depo Provera shot may cause a woman to miss periods for months after stopping the shot.
- Recent pregnancy
- Women who are breastfeeding often don't have regular periods.
- It may take several months for the menstrual cycle to return to normal after childbirth, miscarriage or abortion.
